Maatla directly translates to strength. In this painting, I was intent on translating the strength that young people often find in their maternal figures. The work depicts my brother resting his head on my mother’s back, a gesture that conveys comfort, dependence, and reverence. It also serves as a visual echo of the “Mama” painting, which portrays the same pose but as a self-actualized version of my mother. Together, these works further explore the idea of strength embodied by maternal figures, both within the family and in the broader context of society.
